Roger Goodell gets a new contract. It’s said to be for 5 years at an estimated 20 million per year. Does he deserve that much?

The Good: the players are making more money than ever before. Owners are also thanks to the great TV deals he’s worked out, a 10-year labour agreement, a rise in popularity of the NFL, a new merchandise agreement with Nike that begins in 2012, bananas television ratings, and new television contracts. Additionally, the league has placed an emphasis on player safety and expanded the league’s popularity to Europe.

The Bad: No Fun League, a player can’t barely so much as spike the ball and they’re given a penalty. I don’t know about you but I like the TD celebrations. Football is not a gentlemen’s game, That’s golf. I’m not dissin’ golf but it would be fun to see a Happy Gilmor type game no?

Football is all emotion. You can’t have the players bottle that up. I will admit they were getting a little carried away with T.O. spiking the ball at center field on the Cowboy’s star. That was just rude. But the cell phones and popcorn, the dances, the snow angels, the use of props, they were fun. Remember the Icky shuffle? That would be a penalty now.

His goal as he states is always to improve the game. They always make changes, some good, some not so good. Not every idea is going to work and be good. So I don’t think we can harp on the guy. The NFL is the most successful professional league in North America. It’s even being picked up around the world now.

A lot of players are complaining about this 20 million he gets. They say he doesn’t know how to play football and shouldn’t be getting paid that much. He doesn’t understand the game. Rondey White said “He doesn’t throw, catch, run or kick, so why should he get so much.”

Mr. White, the game of football is really big. Much bigger than you (obviously) can imagine. I’d like to ask Mr. White a few questions. Why do you think someone CAN pay you 8 million a year? Where do you think that comes from? Where do all the sponsors come from? Why do they sponsor your game? Where do the fans come from? Do you really think that just because you can make physic-defying catches the NFL is the most successful league in north America?

To the players, I say you’re over paid whiners. Don’t get me wrong, I love watching you and I think you’re for the most part incredibly talented athletes. And, you get paid very well for what you do. However, without Goodell doing the job he has, you wouldn’t be making what you’re making. It’s like acting. An actor can be the best actor on the planet, but if there performing in someone’s garage instead of Broadway, it’s not going to amount to much, or be much fun and definitely wouldn’t pay as much. Would Brad Pitt be who he is today without Guy Ritchie? What would Gene Kelly have been without MGM? Would they still be stars?

The players play the game, the owners pay them. The league executives provide the stage. Let me say, that the NFL stage is one of the biggest on the planet. Without that “stage” you’re playing Sunday afternoon pick up with the guys.
