Ravens Football!

Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens….when you hear that name, what is your first thought…defense?, Ray Lewis, almost conference champs?, perennial contenders?, feared in the NFL?, etc.   The Baltimore Ravens are one of the best teams in the NFL.  You know that they are going to ‘bring it’ every game and for 60 full minutes.  They have 2 of the most widely respected players in the NFL … Ray Lewis, Linebacker and Ed Reed, Safety.  They anchor one of the most consistent and respected defenses in the game today…and this has been going on for years!  Pretty impressive to be one of the top 5 defenses year after year.  They are fast, tough, strong and mean!  They come to play and will hit you to “lights-out” if given a chance.  They have a passion and love for the game unrivaled in professional sports.  They look like real contenders this year and with the draft and bringing players from other teams on as free-agents, it looks like they have amassed a formidable squad of old and new players.  They are ready to challenge all comers (especially ‘The-Pits-Burgh‘!) for the ultimate prize…Super Bowl XLVI!  They have a great offense with Ray Rice running out of the backfield…one of the best back in the League.  Joe Flacco, QB now has the experience and knowledge that comes with playing 3 years.  They have made some changes this year on the offensive line.  They have moved Michael Oher, of “The Blind Side” fame, to right tackle with the signing of Bryant McKinnie.  Many feel that this move is best for both men as Oher is a better right tackle than left tackle and Bryant is a left side natural.  This year will be exciting.  The most recent Raven’s preseason game found the Ravens behind late in the 4th quarter.  They rallied from behind to win a close one 34-31.  This is a team that has the right balance of young guns and seasoned professionals according to Ray Lewis.  We will await to see what this year holds!

If there’s ever been a show that multitude love to annotate on, it’s definitely the sketch funniness extravaganza on NBC, “Saturday Night Live.” How one show has managed to launch so many incredible comedians, John Belushi and Bill Murray among them, is truly a testament to how good it has been. But for every young voguish star who started out on “SNL,” it seems that there are a do of epic misses, whose comedic timing is less than stellar and whose spin-off movie projects are not even bad passable to be Isaac Mayer Wise good again.

However, in the public of ever-changing tastes and HD live TV sets, there’s definitely still a place for “Saturday Night Live.” After all, things once started to go downhill in the 1990s after the departure of Will Ferrell, but after that slump, things picked back up again with Tina Fey heading back in 2004 to play Sarah Palin during the heated election times.  And even during tougher times, sealed segments always managed to do a good job. There’s much never been a bad “Weekend Update” anchor, and Amy Poehler was one of the best that the show had seen in many years, along with Seth Meyers, who heads things up on his own right now.

This recent cast of “Saturday Night Live” is definitely not one where you can immediately point out the best and brightest comedians of the future.  The one bright spot however, is the fact that the digital shorts seem to be consistently hilarious and often surprisingly off-color for entanglement. With guest appearances by everyone from Susan Sarandon to Justin Timberlake, the digital shorts and music videos alone are worth tuning in – though catching them online once they go viral might often be a far amend use of one’s time.

However, you can’t just dismiss “Saturday Night Live” as it is a huge base of America’s popular acculturation history. Whether it’s catching the re-runs over on Comedy Central and seeing incredible moments from the past, or catching a surprisingly good sequence during this somewhat dry run, there’s always going to be space for “SNL” on satellite online TV, and in the hearts of many Americans.

With the current sluggish economy, people are look for any way to get rid of their wire TV and Satellite Dish TV monthly fees that just seem to keep increasing like health care premiums. Internet TV is fulfilling that demand, and with just a converter box and cable you can watch and hear it directly on your digital LCD or plasm TV right now.

Are you a dedicated Penn State Football Fan? Or do your loyalties lie with Nebraska Football? These 2 college teams will meet up starting in the 2011 college football season because Nebraska joins the Big 10 and while on the field analysts will be going on and on , I wanted to come at the 2 college teams from a different angle and see if I could answer the question. Who has the greatest football fans?

First I should explain my position on this difficult question. I am PA born and raised – Go Lions! I meet and fell in love with a Nebraskan and this made it necessary for me to keep the peace at home – Go Cornhuskers! Therefore I do like to believe I can give a fair opinion here… okay , at least I want to think that, you may disagree with me and that’s fine.

Penn State has the greatest football fans because…

1. Okay, this is simple…the Penn State White Out. The White Out is a tradition that is actually printed on the student section tickets. On designated White Out games, each Nittany Lion fan coming to Beaver Stadium is encouraged to wear white as a symbol of true Penn State Pride.

2. The Student Section. ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit, declared the Nittany Lions Student Section to be “the best in the country”. Beaver Stadium, with a seating capacity of 107,282 is often called as the roughest venue for opposing teams. In 2008, the student section was honored as being the top in college football for the second year in a row.

Nebraska has the greatest football fans because…

1. Nebraska have the longest consecutive sell out record for home games, topping all other college football teams. They celebrated their 306th sell out on September 11, 2010. Their record goes back to November 3rd, 1962.

2. They are well known as the friendliest fans in college football and this comes from competing teams as well. When Texas shattered Nebraska’s home win record , the year Ricky Williams played, instead of booing the ever classy Nebraska fans clapped for Ricky Williams and joined in a chant of “Heisman, Heisman”. This is class in my book.

Okay there you have it, Penn State has the White Out and a disruptive student section while Nebraska has ever present fans that show up at the stadium and a continually demonstrate a whole lot of class.

All I know is that come the 2011 season, I am going to have a hard time when Nebraska and Penn State share the field as powerhouses in the Big Ten Conference.

History of the Stanley Cup

Television rankings and advertising dollars will let you know that championship trophies like The Vince Lombardi trophy in the NFL and the Commissioner’s Trophy in Major League Baseball are the most important prizes to be won in pro sports.

Within the pantheon of final prizes in professional sports activities, however, no sport trophy can match the historical past, mystique, or even the aesthetic aura of Lord Stanley’s Cup. No different sport allows the victors to drink the celebratory champagne from the very trophy they have simply secured while reading the names of the victorious teams that came earlier than them.

The Holy Grail of hockey was established in 1892 as a present from Governor General of Canada Lord Frederick Stanley of Preston to be awarded to the top amateur staff of the land. From 1914 till 1922, the 2 greatest teams the National Hockey Association (NHA) and the Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA)would face off for the prize every year, each year the winner would have the team, management and club staff engraved onto the cup to permanently emblazon their team and their names throughout hockey history.

In 1922, a third league entered the fray for the Stanley Cup when the Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL) joined with the now re-named NHL and the PCHA. The three staff scramble lasted till 1924 when the WCHL and PCHA merged. By 1926, the only league left competing for Lord Stanley’s Mug was the NHL. Though other leagues would compete for the Stanley Cup till the 1940′s, no crew outside of the NHL was able to safe hockey’s biggest prize.

The Cup is rarely duplicated for past champions to get pleasure from like sports trophies in other main sports. Rather, the exact same cup is turned over from the previous yr’s champion to the brand new victor if they should fail to defend it. In other phrases, if you wish to benefit from the Stanley Cup for greater than only one year, your team must earn the appropriate to maintain it.

It’s the exclusivity of the cup that adds to it is elusiveness. Players will refuse to the touch the cup until they have earned the correct by securing the NHL Championship and having their names perpetually etched in immortality. Hockey Legend Ray Borque waited 21 lengthy years earlier than hoisting hockey’s holy grail.

The Stanley Cup also has a constantly altering picture in a means that no different major championship trophy can match. Because the historical past of the sport grows, so does the trophy. What was once a bowl measuring simply over 7 inches in peak now stands almost 3 feet tall and weighs over 34 pounds. As every ring turns into filled with the names of winners past, a new ring is added in order that future victors might be part of the historic ranks on the hallowed cup.

The New Orleans Saints debuted as an NFL team in 1967 and it took quite somet time before they attained even a modest level of success.  Over the ages though this didn’t stop the team from possessing some memorable occasions and fantastic players which include Archie Manning, Earl Campbell, George Rogers, Rickey Jackson, Sam Mills, Pat Swilling, Bobby Hebert, Joe Horn, Deuce McAllister, Drew Brees and Reggie Bush.  The Saints have transformed themselves from a perennial cellar dweller team into one of the franchises that the opposition consistently has to be anxious about.  Here is a glimpse at 5 points you in all probability don’t know about the New Orleans Saints.

1.  The first touchdown was scored by the New Orleans Saints via a 94 yard opening kickoff return by John Gilliam in their very first game in 1967.

2.  Due to damage to the Louisiana Superdome due to Hurricane Katrina, the Saints played all of their home games at various sites through the 2005 season.  They played four home games at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, three home video games at La State University’s Tiger Stadium, and one home game in Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

3.  The Saints traded every single draft pick they had in 1999 plus a 1st and third rounder in 2000 for the legal rights to draft University of Texas running back Ricky Williams.

4.  New Orleans Saints kicker Tom Dempsey set the record for the longest field goal ever in the NFL when he booted a 63 yard field goal against the Detroit Lions in Nov of 1970.  This kick was completed with two secs remaining on the clock and won the game by a score of 19-17.

5.  The New Orleans Saints were the 1st NFL team to put on all black uniforms, both pants and jerseys, when they did so in a 2001 road game with the Carolina Panthers.

The New Orleans Saints’ history as the only professional football team the city of New Orleans has ever had has not always been the smoothest and most pleasant.  The team is much loved by the locals though, as was more than evident following the one year absence following Katrina when they had to play their home games elsewhere.  The Saints shall always be an important element of everything that makes New Orleans rare for many years to come.

Pour On The BBQ Sauce!

When I was growing up, I loved the flavor of bbq sauce . I ate it on everything from hamburgers to onion rings. Much to my mother’s disappointment, bbq sauce graced our dinner table every night . I slathered all of the good cooking with bbq sauce, but at least I always clean my plate even if I soaked my dinner in sauce to do it.

As I entered into adulthood, I became a little more discriminating when it came to bbq sauce . I still loved the flavor and bbq sauce was my favorite dip of choice for French fries, but my taste buds became more conventional when it came to my use of bbq sauce. I liked to dip my steak in it or make oven baked chicken basted in a nice hickory bbq sauce.

With my love of any meat cooked with bbq sauce, it was inevitable that I eventually visit the south. The south is the bbq capital of the world. I had heard about the world famous bbq’s in the Deep South and my mouth watered in anticipation as I packed my bags. I tried to do a little research to find out where the best bbq sauce was served. Everyone told me that I had to try a pulled pork sandwich and wash it down with sweat tea if I wanted to experience true Southern bbq .

The day I arrived in the state of Alabama, I bundled to the closest bbq joint. You could smell the meat cooking a mile away and as I pulled into the parking lot, I breathed deeply of the exciting scent. I had my moist towelettes. I had a spare shirt. I was ready for the sauciest bbq sauce and a pile of pulled pork. I placed my order and waited impatiently for my dinner to arrive. When the waitress placed it in front of me, I took one look at it and told her she had made a mistake .

‘There isn’t any bbq sauce on my pork.’ I explained.

The waitress just laughed as she poured me a glass of sugary iced tea. ‘Darlin’ that is real Southern bbq. We don’t use bbq sauce. The secret is in how we cook the meat, we don’t want to ruin it by drowning it.’ She saw my disappointment and brought me some bottled bbq sauce on the side. I did try her traditional pulled pork minus the bbq sauce and it was good, but for me, it tasted so much more familiar when I slathered it with my favorite sauce.

Just one with the most successful college football programs inside the history with the game has been the Bulldogs from the University of Georgia. With a winning percentage that equates to victories in nearly two out of every single three games they have ever played, the Bulldogs have traditionally occupied a position from the rarified atmosphere of college football’s premier teams. Located from the SEC (Southeastern Conference), the Georgia teams have seen some much less than stellar seasons inside the last a number of years, although they remain competitive and are generally among the twenty-five top programs in any given year.  Many wonderful players have played in their 90,000 seat capacity stadium in Athens – a stadium so large that only four North American stadiums surpass it in size –over the years, with one with the more recognizable of those players being the good Herschel Walker, running back for the Georgia teams of 1980, ’81, and ’82.The future HeismanWalker was 1 of those rare running backs who produced contributions wherever he went. Upon arriving at the Georgia campus, he saw play being a freshman – lots of play – as he bowled over opposing defenders on his method to new freshman records for yards rushing. Most impressively, the Georgia team was undefeated in Walker’s initial season, which helped propel the young man into third place in that year’s Heisman voting. The simple fact that he was even in contention in an era that frowned on such awards for freshmen is just 1 indication of how good he definitely was. After defeating the Notre Dame Fighting Irish inside postseason Sugar Bowl, the Bulldogs were awarded a national title. Walker would continue his powerful running throughout the next two seasons, performing so well that he was finally awarded the Heisman Trophy in his junior season of 1982.The junior expertWith his junior year at an end, Walker felt that he had nothing left to prove. Though the existing National Football League rules of the time forbade any team from drafting players until they had completed their senior season, Walker decided to discover one more way into the pro ranks. It manufactured sense to him from both a personal and financial sense – right after winning a national title like a freshman and also the Heisman like a junior, it was unlikely that his stock inside the NFL draft would be elevated by a return for his senior season. In simple fact, an injury could have manufactured him much less attractive. With an eye toward controlling his own future as a professional, Walker opted to sign on with the United States Football League, utilizing his considerable skills as running back correct up until the League disbanded in 1986. The Dallas Cowboys, nevertheless, had selected Walker in the draft of 1985, and openly welcomed him to their ranks in 1986.A legacy of unorthodox decisionsWhen folks hear Herschel Walker’s name these days, they most typically think of his Heisman year and his expertise being a runner. However, his off-field victories were just as significant in the evolution of the game. Actually, every underclassman that enters the NFL draft early has Herschel Walker to thank for paving the way.
